THE BIG HOUSES

About The Big Houses

Our Mission

The Big Houses was founded with a simple yet powerful mission: to help homeowners and home enthusiasts everywhere make smarter decisions, through approachable guidance and free tools that make understanding mortgages, property tax, renovation budgets, and the cost of ownership clearer, more rewarding, and more practical.

We believe that everyone who owns or dreams of a home, from first-time buyers to lifelong renovators, deserves access to accurate tools, comprehensive resources, and trustworthy guidance. Our platform bridges the gap between confusing jargon and confident, well-informed decisions about home buying and mortgages, renovation and interior design, property investment, luxury and dream homes, home maintenance, and financing a home wisely.

Through our free collection of tools, we help homeowners make informed decisions about monthly mortgage payments, property tax, renovation costs, room dimensions, homeowners insurance, and a home’s likely value. Every tool is designed with real-world applicability in mind, tested against the day-to-day realities of buying, owning, and improving a home, and continuously improved based on user feedback. To go deeper, explore our Homes & Architecture museum, with galleries on classic and luxury homes, striking contemporary builds, sustainable and smart homes, and the design behind every great house.

Our Story

The Big Houses emerged from a need we experienced firsthand. While trying to sort through conflicting advice and scattered references, we noticed a common challenge: the lack of accessible, accurate tools for the everyday decisions that come with buying a home, running the numbers on ownership, and keeping a property well maintained.

Smart home ownership relies heavily on curiosity and a little know-how, which are invaluable. However, a confident buyer also benefits from clear answers about how a mortgage payment breaks down, what a property tax bill will be, how much a remodel might cost, whether a room can fit the layout you want, and what a home is realistically worth. We saw an opportunity to combine well-researched real-estate knowledge with modern tools to help people make confident decisions about every home.

Our team began developing tools that we wished existed when we bought our first homes. Each calculator and guide was created to solve real problems encountered when comparing mortgage offers, estimating renovation costs, or budgeting property tax. We tested every tool against real-world numbers, refined the logic based on feedback, and ensured that the results reflected current, widely accepted real-estate practice.

Today, The Big Houses serves active users worldwide, from first-time buyers to lifelong home enthusiasts. Our tools have helped people compare mortgages, estimate property tax, project renovation budgets, size rooms, ballpark insurance, and gauge home value, and make more deliberate, confident property decisions.

Our Core Values

Our Expertise

The Big Houses’s tools and guides are developed and maintained by a team with extensive real-estate experience across multiple areas:

Our team includes experienced homeowners, contractors, writers, and reviewers who bring years of combined experience to tool development. We regularly consult industry references and trusted experts to ensure our content reflects current best practices. Our content is general informational and educational content, NOT professional real estate, financial, legal, or appraisal advice; results vary — verify figures with a licensed agent, lender, appraiser, contractor, or local authority before making decisions.

Looking Forward

The future of home ownership lies in the intelligent combination of curiosity and proven know-how with modern tools and clear knowledge. At The Big Houses, we’re committed to staying at the forefront of this evolution.

Our development roadmap includes expanded tools for ownership planning, renovation budgeting, value comparison, and cost estimation. We’re also working on multilingual support to serve the global community of homeowners better, and developing specialized guidance for different property types, home styles, and ways of improving them more deliberately.

Most importantly, we remain committed to keeping our tools free and accessible. As we grow, we’ll continue to prioritize user needs, ensuring that everyone has access to practical home tools regardless of their budget.
