Tierney notes that the area has a wide range of buyers, from city employees and teachers to young professionals, drawn to its relatively affordable prices. In another Boston neighborhood, Roslindale, sales were up last year over 2023, and the area has a thriving local business scene, cultural diversity, and plenty of outdoor spaces. “Roslindale has everything that makes for a vibrant neighborhood,” says Roslindale resident and business owner. “Yet it remains something of a hidden gem, with less buzz than some other areas, and condos and some single-family homes still available at comparatively accessible prices by Boston standards.”
Dorchester is Boston’s largest neighborhood, and it has a rich cultural heritage. Charlestown is Boston’s oldest neighborhood, with a deep history and a strong sense of community. The area has a walkable, welcoming atmosphere, and residents take care of each other. “Family and community and a sense of pride are very much part of the makeup of Charlestown,” says Gorman. “We all just take care of each other.”
West Roxbury combines the tree-lined streets, grassy lawns, and community vibe of the suburbs with the urban energy and walkable stores and restaurants of the city. The area has housing options for single-family homes and condos in renovated houses and newer developments. In JP (Jamaica Plain), the neighborhood has a bohemian reputation with its annual Porchfest music event, strong arts community, and significant LGBTQ population. “The future of the neighborhood is less clear,” says Charles Cherney, a real estate agent in Cambridge. “A recent city vote will allow four-story homes to be built on residential properties without special permits or variances, with six stories permitted on some lots, as long as they include affordable housing.”
Riverside (Cambridge) is another highly sought-after neighborhood, with a median home price of $1.4 million and a proximity to Harvard Square, Harvard University, and the businesses and restaurants along Massachusetts Avenue. “Riverside is an attractive spot for families, with several well-kept parks and playgrounds scattered throughout, as well as one of the city’s most highly-rated elementary schools,” says Cherney. Finally, downtown Boston is a hub of activity, with high-end condos and luxury amenities. While it may not be the first neighborhood that comes to mind when thinking of home buying, it has its own unique charm. The area is popular with home buyers drawn to its central location and stunning views. But be prepared to pay a premium for a home in the area.
